shooty mans and spooky aliens

(Click on the picture. So pretty!)

Natural Selection turns 7 years old! The first game was my favorite Half Life mod (outside of the great and mighty Team Fortress Classic) and was certainly one of the most inventive and successful mods in that community at the time. Well, the team is currently hard at work on the sequel, and I mean really fucking hard at work. These guys aren't exactly rolling in dough and can use any support they can get. So basically what I'm saying is that you should skip that pizza you were gonna order for dinner and pre-order what should be a very cool game made by very cool people

Oh man do I want to shoot this wine into my glowing orange weak spots until I stagger drunkenly into game-over.

all i need is love (and friends to play with me . . . )

Love is a game being developed by only one man, Eskil Steenberg. The team size, however, does not seem to denote the game's massive scale, its massive ambition, or just how damn good it looks. Love is a persistent and constantly evolving online game where you and the other 199 people on the server battle the computer AI. In between the jaw-dropping visuals and the crazy amounts of possibilities inherent in the terrain deformation mechanic, you can color me interested. The game has recently entered an open alpha. and anyone can join for the entry price of 3 euros. Download the alpha client here so I have someone to play with!

Check out this segment that the Area-5 guys did on the game if you need a little convincing or some more information:

spooky time

In honor of October, it's spooky game month here at The Do Blog. First up, we're going to spotlight The Path by Tale of Tales (I guess it's art game month too?). The Path is a disturbing take on the classic Little Red Riding Hood story.

Now I haven't actually played The Path yet, so this post isn't a personal recommendation of any sort. However, The Path has generated quite a lot of buzz within the gaming community, both good and bad. Check out all five episodes of the summer gaming confab over at The Brainy Gamer for instance. The game designers, critics, and scholars involved in the confab constantly used Tale of Tales' game as an example of a profound, provocative, unsettling, and new development in the games industry. Plus, how many other games that aren't generating millions of dollars get any kind of national media attention, especially from a news outlet like NPR? (article and audio link found here.)

If you want to get a taste for the potentially off-putting controls before you dive in, download the demo level here.

You can buy Tale of Tale's take on The Little Red Riding Hood for $10 at their website, steam, or direct2drive in both PC and Mac clients.

In the meantime, I have my copy ready and waiting for the next time a rainy night with nothing to do comes along. Hopefully I won't cry like a little girl the first time something unexpected happens!

passage, a video game by Jason Rohrer

I have my own thoughts and reflections, but I think the experience will be more fulfilling (or frustrating) if you write the commentary for yourself and by yourself.

Play Passage here.
